Hormonal acne.
𝗛𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗮𝗰𝗻𝗲 𝗶𝘀 𝗮 𝙗𝙞𝙩𝙘𝙝.
This type of acne is caused by hormonal fluctuations & is often related to your menstrual cycle, usually (though not always) appearing right before or during your period. It can also be caused by Polycystic Ovary Syndrome - PCOS - ( 🎵 𝙞𝙩’𝙨 𝙢𝙚 𝙝𝙞, 𝙄’𝙢 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙥𝙧𝙤𝙗𝙡𝙚𝙢 𝙞𝙩’𝙨 𝙢𝙚 🙋🏻♀️ 🎵 ), pregnancy, menopause & increased androgen levels.
Hormonal acne is characteristically on the lower half of the face around the chin/jawline and is often very angry, very inflamed, very sore and very stubborn to treat…It’s also a bloody nightmare to cover with makeup as it’s not like your normal breakout (texture, inflammation, blah blah blah..)
I’ve got a beast at the moment that will not be hidden and it bloody hurts..
I had clients in my studio today and when this hormonal disaster hit my face I was bloody gutted, initially thinking “𝘐 𝘤𝘢𝘯’𝘵 𝘣𝘦 𝘴𝘦𝘦𝘯 𝘵𝘰 𝘣𝘦 𝘸𝘰𝘳𝘬𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘢𝘴 𝘢𝘯 𝘔𝘜𝘈 𝘭𝘰𝘰𝘬𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘭𝘪𝘬𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘴” and set to work trying to cover it - layers of colour correction, concealer, powder, you name it - it wasn’t working, I was crying, my skin was screaming in pain and then I just thought, fuck it.
𝙋𝙧𝙖𝙘𝙩𝙞𝙘𝙚 𝙬𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙮𝙤𝙪 𝙥𝙧𝙚𝙖𝙘𝙝, 𝘾𝙡𝙖𝙧𝙚!
Skin as angry and vulnerable as this does not need layers of product, it needs to breathe! I’d tell any client this and yet I was sat there 723 (ish) layers deep, introducing bacteria to what is essentially an open wound and causing myself pain all because I was embarrassed about my skin.
Well. How bloody stupid!
So, I did my eyes & the rest of my face but left the affected area bare, making sure there was no product on there. It needs to heal, it does not need to be covered.
𝘛𝘩𝘢𝘵’𝘴 𝘰𝘬.
Breakouts happen. We shouldn’t be ashamed of our skin.
I’m off to take some ibuprofen and put a hot water bottle over my uterus.
𝙊𝙫𝙚𝙧 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙤𝙪𝙩. ✌️
